Keeping up with Workouts and Healthy Eating During Travel

Whether you are traveling for work or for fun, it's always a challenge to keep up with your regular workouts and with healthy eating during travel. So here are a few tips on how to fit it all in.

When packing, make sure to pack at least 1 set of workout clothes and your running/athletic shoes. In addition, pack healthy snacks such as raisins and almonds, a low sugar energy bar and fresh fruit. Also, don't forget to pack your re-usuable water bottle to help you remember to drink water every day.

For workouts, use the hotel gym or research online ahead of time to see if there are any cool classes you can take in that town. Even just one 20 minute jog/brisk walk will help you meet your workout quota . If there are no good options, 15-20 mins of gentle stretching exercises every day you are away can also help. For snacks, try to stick with healthy snacks that you packed. For meals, be conscious of your food choices and pick restaurants that offer healthy choices or alternatives. And, if you have to choose fast food, more fast food restaurants are offering better and healthier choices. I usually look for a Starbucks so that I can get their snack packs or pre-made sandwiches. I also found a great article (link below) in More Magazine that highlights other good fast food choices.

Enjoy your next trip, I hope these tips will help you get that workout in.

Hope to see you for a session this week.

Starting and Staying with a Good Training Plan

One of the toughest things about working out is sticking with your training plan or exercise regimen. One great way to stay on track is to establish a goal.

First, establish your goal. For example, "I'm going to get in shape by July 4th" or "I'm going to dedicate the next 12 weeks to get in shape." Then, pick your favorite activities: running, cycling, hiking, yoga, boot camp, etc... If you are starting from scratch, start off slow, if you are already working out and reaching your plateau, try something very different from what you've been doing (aerial arts, boxing, plyometrics). Finally, develop a plan either on your own or with a coach or trainer and start working out.

Once you've established a goal and created your plan, your workouts will become more a part of your life and less of a hassle. Your increased and regular physical activity will not only curb your appetite but will also affect your food choices. Moreover, if you know you have a hard workout scheduled in the morning, you will most likely not load up on junk food the night before. These benefits and more can be achieved through a dedicated training plan.

We spend so much time planning and setting goals for so many aspects of our lives, but don't necessarily dedicate as much time to our own physical health and well-being. So, what have you got to lose? Get started and set your fitness goal now.

Have great week. Schedule and announcements below. Hope to see you soon.

Did you get all of your workouts in last week?

It's Sunday. Take a quick look back at the past week. Did you get all your workouts in? If you didn't, why not? What got in the way of that run you wanted to do or that class you wanted to take?

Make a promise to yourself that this week, you are going to try your best to not miss them this time. The more you establish a weekly workout routine, whatever it is, the harder it is to break it. You will find ways to work around those obstacles and get those workouts in. So, make a plan for this week to schedule in those workouts.

Have a great week and hope to see you at a session,
Barb

Long Term Weight Loss Tips from Shape Mag

What a beautiful weekend! Hope you all took advantage of this great weather.

I've been asked about diet a few times and wanted to share with you an article from Shape magazine that I liked. In it, they provide weight loss tips that resonated with me.

Personally, I've found that whenever I'm specifically training for a race (marathon, half-marathon, etc.), I tend to choose healthier foods that work well for my weekly workouts. The more training I do, the better I eat and it generally helps make me feel better in my workouts.

Hope you can join me for a session this week. Take a look at the schedule below. Also, we are looking for 2-3 more people for a 3 or 6 week Intensive. Details below. Let me know if you are interested.

Schedule this week:
Email me to save your spot. 2 person min to run each session. We will meet at South Park in Hermosa Beach

Tuesday, 9:30a All Levels
Wednesday, 9:00a All Levels
Thursday, 9:30a All Levels
Friday, 9:00a All Levels
Saturday, 8:00a All Levels

3 or 6 Week Intensive:
We need 2-3 more people to run the Intensive. The Intensive will run on Tuesday & Thursday at 9:30a. Each session will get progressively more difficult and you will workout with the same group each session. You will also have the option at the end of the 3 weeks, to continue for another 3 weeks making it a 6 week Intensive. Email me ASAP if you would like to participate.
