Aviation Track is Back!

Happy Monday!

While running my holiday errands I noticed that Aviation Park has re-opened. So we can get back to our beloved track for our workouts! If you are around, and would like to get a few sessions in before the New Year, check out the schedule below and email me to save your spot. Hope to see you this week!

Happy Holidays!

Just a quick note to say Happy Holidays to you all!

I am mostly taking a break for the Holidays this week. However, I am available for a Monday morning workout (yes tomorrow morning!) at 9:30a if anyone is interested. Given the rain, the session would have to be at my home. So, please let me know ASAP and I will be happy to workout with you.

The schedule will be back to normal between Christmas and NYE for anyone who is around and interested in a few sessions. I will send out the schedule next Sunday.

Time to work off all those Halloween Treats!

Happy Halloween!

Hope you had a blast! Personally, I feel like I've eaten an entire truckload of candy and treats in the past 72 hours. So, let's get together for a few sessions this week to work it off.

Hope you are all well. Hoping for a dry week so that we can all get back to some outdoor workouts. Again, if it rains on a the day of a session, the backup location is my home in Hermosa.

News About Aviation Field:
Our beloved Track at Aviation will be closing during the Month of November and December for the installation of new turf. So, I am scouting a new temp location for our outdoor workouts. South Park in Hermosa Beach is a possibility as well as Polliwog Park in Manhattan. If you have any suggestions, please email me and I will scope it out. Two big requirements: A fence to hold on to and a flat grassy area (fake grass is best).

Reminder about Sessions on Wet/Rainy Days

Just a reminder that if it's raining or too wet on the field, the back up location is my home: 960 15th Pl. in H.B. I have a large living room that can accomodate us. I will shoot an email in the AM to confirmed attendees to confirm location on these days.

Squeezing in your workouts

I know most of you, like me, are adjusting to the new schedule with kids in school and may have put working out to the sidelines. Well, here's your chance to get back on the workout wagon by squeezing in a Core Session with me this week. Also, for those of you who are looking for a new challenge, I would like to start an Intermediate Level Intensive (more details below).

Workouts to get you motivated!

If you're looking for a way to get your head out of this Southbay fog, come workout with me this week! Schedule and tips to get you re-inspired to workout are below.

Schedule Week of July 11th:
I am travelling Thursday - Saturday this week, so I will not be able to hold sessions on those days.

How to Motivate:
The worst thing about seeing overcast skies day after day is what it does to my motivation. Honestly, all I want to do is sleep in, stay home and eat junk (example: hot apple pie a la mode). Ok...so I haven't done that yet...although it is tempting. Instead, I'm back to goal setting. My new goal: Beat my best 10k Race Time. I've trained for long distance but I haven't trained for speed, so I'm looking forward to the workouts that will help me to achieve this goal. Have you set a fitness goal for yourself? If you haven't, consider it, it may be just the thing you need to get past the impact of the clouds that have been lingering too long into July.

When training for any race, I always try to incorporate Tempo Runs into my running workouts. Check out this article to Learn How To Do A Perfect Tempo Run From Runner's World.com

Mom Camp, Schedule & Summer BBQ Recipes

Mom Camp
-I'm available to do a Mom Camp the week of July 5th with a schedule as follows:
Tues, Thurs, Sat - Core Workout
Wed - Beach Bootcamp

Early Morning Sessions and More

New Early Morning Session:
Last Friday I held a 5:45a Core Group Session and it was great! Track was clear and cool and the workout was done by 7am. If you would like to join me for an early morning session, I will be holding them at the following times at Aviation Track:

6 Week Intensive and 3 Week Intensive continue in their last week at normal times. (Please note these sessions are full and closed)

Fit in 2-3 Cardio Workouts this week

Hello!

Despite being solo with the kids for the last 72 hours, I got a long run in, and it felt GREAT! On that note, make sure you make time for your cardio workouts. It's an essential part of a holistic fitness routine that will keep you fit and keep you in the habit of regular exercise.

With summer coming and schedules changing, it's important to set up your routine now and stick with it (even on vacation). 2-3 days a week of 30mins to 1hr mins of cardiovascular exercise (example: running, swimming, kick-boxing, cycling) combined with 2-3 days of strength training is a great combo.

Of course, start slow, especially if you are starting from scratch. Try a long walk on the beach or strand. Moreover, get out there now and get a routine going!

It's June!

Last Week of May & Summer Plans

Summer is fast approaching, so let's make sure to get some more workouts in so that we are ready for the beach!

Mini- Intensive:

I'd like to start the 3 week mini-intensive next week June 1st. Session times would be Tuesday 9:30a and Thursday 9a (Thurs needs to start earlier so I can still run a regular session at 10a). So, please let me know this week, if you would like to join. We need a minimum of 4 persons to run the session (6 max). Participants need to have taken at least 1 class prior to the Mini-Intensive.

Summer Sessions & Summer Mom Camp:

Summer Sessions:
With schedules changing for Summer break , I wanted to re-confirm session timeframes. Based on discussions with some of you, 9:30a is the earliest time midweek (M-F) for workout sessions in the summer. So I will set weekly schedules based on this info.

I am also considering getting sitters to meet us at the field to help watch our kids while we workout. Ideally we would get 1-2 sitters and pay $1 to $2/child directly to the sitter. Let me know if you are interested in sharing a sitter.

Summer Mom Camp:
I'd like to run 2-4 Mom Camps this summer. The "Camp" would be 1 week (5 days), 1 hour/day. The Camp would include 2 Days of our Barbfit Group Core Sessions, 1 Running Clinic/Analysis, 1 Cardio/Boot Camp & 1 Beg Yoga session. The cost for the 1 week camp would be $50 ($10/day) We would need a min of 5 persons to set this up. Let me know if this is something you would like to do. Dates and Times TBD.

This Week and the Mini-Intensive

Hello,

Just flew back in tonight from cold and rainy San Francisco to cold and rainy LA??? Whaaat?? Hope you all are bearing with the weather. So let's get our minds off the elements by participating in a few good workouts this week!

Tuesday - No Session (sorry for the late notice but 18 mo old is under the weather)

6 Week Intensive - (Full - Session is closed)

Mini-Intensive
I'd also like to throw out the option of a mini-session that would start 1st week of June and last for 3 weeks. Essentially, I am trying to line it up to coincide with the last 3 weeks of school. Tuesday & Thursday are still the days i would be shooting for. We would need 4 persons min to make this happen (6 max).

Ways to keep warm this week!

Wow! It's cold out there. Makes me want to curl up on the couch and eat comfort foods!

OK, to ward off the couch potato urges, try one of these: Go for a run (I just did, it really helped!), Get out to the park and run around with your kids and/or come to one of my sessions this week!

Schedule for this week is as follows:

As usual, we will be at the track in Redondo (Aviation Field corner of Manhattan Bch Blvd and Aviation)

The 6 week Intensive continues this week at our usual times Wed & Friday at 9am. Although this Intensive is full, if there is enough interest, I am happy to kick start another intensive if there are enough people. (4 min, 6 max)

Also here's a healthy and tasty way to stay warm with Stuffed Cinnamon French Toast (from Men's Health Nutrition Guide). My husband, Bryan, made these Easter morning and they were REALLY good, hard to believe that they are actually good for you! Enjoy! Barb

Stuffed Cinnamon French Toast

2 tbsp part-skim ricotta cheese
2 slices whole grain bread
1 tsp honey
pinch+1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp slices almonds
1 egg
1 tbsp 1% milk
handful of fresh berries

Spread the room-temp ricotta on a slice of whole-grain bread. Drizzle the honey over the cheese and sprinkle lightly with a pinch of cinnamon. Top with sliced almonds and another slice of whole-grain bread. Whisk together the egg, milk, and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Dip the bread into the egg mixture and cook over medium heat on a nonstick griddle of skillet coated with cooking spray, until the bread is lightly browned and the cheese is melted. Serve with berries. Makes 1 serving

Per serving: 340 Calories, 17grams protein, 41 carbohydrates (8 g fiber) 14 g fat (2 g saturated), 390 milligrams of sodium

The Barbfit Website is Live!

Hey Everyone!

I'm happy to announce that I have the first version of my website live! Woo Hoo!

It's the first version, so I will be adding more pix and more info over the next month. Let me know if there is something more you would like to see on the site and I will try to incorporate it.

Note that I will continue this weekly blog as it's a great way to send you info, articles, recipes etc. And also an easy way to let you know what's going on every week.


Week of April 11th Session Times:
Workout Sessions will be Tues & Thursday at 9:30a at the Redondo Track (Manhattan Beach Blvd & Aviation) I am also holding a Wednesday session at 9am, as I am heading out of town early Friday morning and cannot run a session on Friday. Let me know what day or days you can join so I can plan accordingly.

6 Week Intensive: The Six week intensive is currently scheduled to start next week (Week of April 19th). I have space for 2 possibly 3 more if you are interested in siging up. The days and time that currently works is Wednesday and Friday at 9am. Note for those who cannot attend the 6 week Intensive, I will still run regular sessions on Fridays, but will need to move the time to 10a-11a. Hope that still works for you all. Welcome Back Workouts

Welcome back!

I hope all of you had a wonderful break and are all rested up and ready to come to a session this week! I will be doing workouts Tues, Thurs & Friday at 9:30a this week. Please let me know which day or days you would like to join.

6 Week Intensive:
I would like to start the 6 Week Intensive the week of 4/19. The goal is to have 2 sessions/week (ex:Tues/Thurs or Wed/Friday). The 6 week program will still focus on a core workout, but each week will be designed to increase the intensity of the work we do. I need a minimum of 4 participants to run the sessions. If you pay in advance, you will get 1 class free in the 6 week session. (12 sessions for $110) I would also like to start earlier (8:30a-ish) so that I can still run the other classes at the regular 9:30a time frame. So let me know who is interested and what days work best for you.

Spring Break Schedule & 5 Rules for Flat Abs

Happy Spring Break!

For those of you who are in town for some or all of this week, I'll be holding sessions Monday, 3/29 at 9:30a and Friday, 4/2 at 9:30am. Hope to see you. Email me if you can make one or both sessions!

For those of you who are out of town this Spring Break, I thought I would share with you some tips I found in Women's Health that will help flatten out those abs. Heck, with the weather we are having right now, we should use every trick we can to get bikini/bathing suit ready as fast as we can! Hope these tips are helpful!

The Five Rules of Flat Abs: (I've summarized the article below):

Rule 1: Attack your hidden core muscles
To burn 1 lb of fat, you would have to do 250,000 crunches, moreover, crunches only will not work your core muscles. Instead work the muscles that lie beneath the superficial ones: your transverse abdominus, multifidis and internal obliques (for more detail on these muscles see this link: http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/abdominalcorestrength1/ss/AbAnatomy.htm). Strengthening these muscles pulls in your midsection like a corset! Exercises like the Plank is great for the transverse abdominus.


Rule 2: Move You Butt:
Your butt and your belly are unlikely partners in crime. Over time, sitting around too much renders your hip flexors to become stiff. This combo tilts your pelvis forward, which increases the arch in your back and puts stress on your spine. All of this essentially pushes your abdomen out! (UGH!) All this means that to lose your gut, you have to work your butt!


Rule #3: Eat Flat-Belly Foods:
  • Pump up your protein intake: Try substituting meat, fish, dairy and nuts for carbs.
  • Eliminate added sugar: the avg American eats about 20 tsp of sugar everyday in the form of processed foods (cereal, soda, fruit drinks). That's 325 empty calories/day. Al that sugar increases insulin production which slows down your metabolism.
  • Don't cut out ALL fat: Choose foods that are rich in monounsaturated fats such as olives, nuts, and avocados. And it is OK to eat whole foods in moderation with saturated fats (milk, cheese, butter)
  • Beat the Bloat: Carbonated drinks and even good for your foods such as beans and broccoli will make you swell. The best tip is to watch your sodium intake: Nutritionists suggest that you should consume less then 2,000 milligrams each day to avoid excess water (most get closer to 5,000/day)

Rule # 4: Stop Stressing
Anxiety caused by stress can produce an excess level of cortisol, a hormone that encourages the body to store extra fat, particularly in your belly. Researchers at Yale University reported that your midsection is 4x as likely as the rest of your body to store stress-induced fat. Tip: if you can, take a short break from work every 90 mins to breathe and relax. Also, stay away from junk foods during stress.

Rule #5: Work Your Abs Less Often
Don't do ab work daily. You only need 3 sessions/week to see max results. Give your muscles a full day to recover.

I know that many of you are runners so I wanted to share a great article that I saw from Active.com (Active/Women) entitled: Tackling the Top Running Injuries.

Here's an excerpt that really resonated with me:
Is there anything else a female runner can do to stay injury-free? To avoid all of these injuries, I recommend the following three tips.

The first is to warm up to stretch, not stretch to warm up. You should run for three to five minutes or do some power walking to warm up your musculature and then stretch. This is a change in thinking from what we are accustomed to, but studies show that you can decrease your rate of injury by warming up before you stretch.

The second tip is to plan for rest. I think a lot of runners, especially beginners, don't incorporate rest into their workout regimen. I think women runners, in particular, are very goal-driven and often believe they have to work out every day in order to reach their goals. But the best way to prevent injury is to incorporate rest.

The last tip is to hydrate. I think a lot of runners don't know how much to hydrate. As a rule of thumb, for an average runner, you should rehydrate with 17 ounces of water for every pound that's lost and drink throughout the day until your urine is a light yellow or clear color. I recommend measuring your pre- and post-run weight. These are all proactive steps to help prevent injuries in the first place.

Core Strength

So good to see all of you who were able to come out this week. What luck we've had with the weather. Somehow the track at Redondo manages to stay sunny, warm and dry right when we start our core sessions.

Core Strength:
I hope you are starting to feel the effects of the core strengthening work through our sessions. Note that just the stance that we take at the beginning of class is helping to strengthen your core muscles in a way that can help you in everyday life. New February Schedule

Hope you all are well! Just a quick note to let you know that I am updating the schedule to try to hold multiple sessions on 1 day/week.

Last week of January already!!

Wow! Where did this month go? I can't believe it's the end of January already.

What does that mean for me? It means that the clock is ticking for hitting all my fitness goals for the year. Have you all established a 2010 fitness goal for yourself? If you haven't yet, maybe it's time to set one. Whether it's to run your first 5k or Half Marathon or to shed those holiday pounds, set that goal now and let's help you find ways to meet that goal. What motivates me is signing up for an event. Since I have to pay for it, I feel obligated to make sure that I can complete that event. (My next investment will be the LA Marathon.)

So on the note of running, let's do a running clinic! If we get 6 or more people, I can set one up on Sunday (time TBD). The 90-min group clinic will include a 10 min warm-up, either a speed or tempo workout, and a 10 min stretch and cool down. I will take the videos home and send you an email running assessment. $10 (donation requested, or whatever you can afford). Let me know if you would like to join and of course, BRING YOUR FRIENDS!!

Finally, group core training sessions are set for Tues and Thursday @ 9:30am at the Redondo Track unless there is a weather issue. Please let me know who will be attending this week's sessions so that I can plan accordingly.

This Week and Session Rates

Happy Monday!

Hope you all are still getting your workouts in despite this lovely weather.

Just wanted to remind you that this week I'm planning on a Tuesday and Thursday session both at 9:30a. I am open to holding a 10:30 and/or 11:30 session on Thursday as well if that's better and/or you have friends you want to bring to try out the workout. Also note that unless it is bright and sunny tomorrow and Thursday, sessions will be at my house: 960 15th Place Hermosa Beach. The upside is that we can put a little music on in the background. (woo hoo!)

The Perfect Push Up
The push up is an amazing and simple way to get in shape. When you have mastered the push up, the strength you feel and the definition you can get is impressive. Try to incorporate 10-20 push ups in your next workout. If you stick with it and incporporate it into your routine 2-3 times per week, you will start to feel stronger. Pancakes that I love!!

I'm not sure when I started making these, but they they have replaced regular pancakes for several years now and I love them and the kids love them. The best part is that it's healthy and good for the whole family. These pancakes are packed with protein and the recipe is so easy and fast that we can even pull off making them for all 3 kids midweek and still get everyone to school on time. Try it out and let me know what you think.


Oatmeal Pancakes:
1 cup fat free cottage cheese
1 cup oatmeal (old-fashioned or multigrain from TJ's works great)
6 egg whites
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamin
Option: 1/2 or whole bannana


Throw all of the above ingredients into a blender and blend until it's liquified. Pour onto a pan or pancake grill (makes about 6-8 pancakes) and serve with syrup (real maple syrup is my favorite).

Welcome to 2010

Welcome to the new year and welcome to my new Blog! Let me know what you think of the blog name, wanted to keep it short sweet and easily memorable.

Hopefully this will be a great (and easy) way to get info out to everyone about the schedule of workouts every month. My goal is to have 2 set workouts/week for a total of 8 sessions/month. I'd like to keep class size to 4 so I can provide more individual training. And if I have the good fortune of demand increasing then I will start to add more sessions.

Group Core Strengthening Sessions for all of my testers (Jenn, Char, EBeth, Brooke & Trisha) will be free in January. All I ask in return is for you to recommend my training sessions to friends. I have sample pricing below. Let me know what you think.

Here's the schedule for January, all sessions will be at the Redondo Track (if it rains we can default to my house):

Tue - 1/5/10 9:30a-10:30a
Fri - 1/8/10 9:30a-10:30a

Tue - 1/12/10 9:30a-10:30a
Fri - 1/15/10 9:30a-10:30a

Tue - 1/19/10 9:30a-10:30a
Thu - 1/21/10 9:30a-10:30a

Tue - 1/26/10 9:30a-10:30a
Thu - 1/28/10 9:30a-10:30a

Here's what I am thinking for pricing:
1 Group Training Session - drop in rate $20 (4 people max)
8 Group Training Sessions Package - $150 (4 people max)
1-1 Individual Session - $50
1 hour Run Clinic - $10/person (min 6 peeople to set up clinic) Clinic will include individual video analysis, and a sample run workout.

Extras:
-Will post to the blog weekly with articles, recipes, tips and other.
-TBD (email subscriptions, online trainer, mobile apps???)
