4 Days of Fitness!

Only a few more days until Christmas so why not get four days of workouts in before the big day.  Below is the schedule for this week along with some tips on staying fit through the holidays.

Have a great week!  See you soon!

Barb

Core Group Schedule:
Wednesday: 9a All Levels
Friday: 9a All Levels

Circuit Training:
Thursday: 9a All Levels
Friday: 10a All Levels

All Sessions at South Park, 2 person min to run. Email to save a spot.

Manhattan Beach Yuletide 5K
2 Race Times at 3pm and 5:30pm.
I hope to run this with my 8 year old.  Looks like a lot of fun.  Hope to see you there!

Quick Tips for staying fit during the holidays:

  • Wear tight fitting pants to holiday parties.  It's hard to fit a ton of food in when the pants won't allow.  It's at least a reminder to try not to over-indulge
  • Eat a regular meal before arriving at holiday party so you are not starved, when you get there, just take small samples of the good stuff and pass on the heavy stuff like bread, potatoes, etc.
  • Pick low calorie alcoholic drinks - Skinny margaritas and vodka drinks are great choices as long as the mixer doesn't have too much sugar
  • Workout first thing in the morning before running all of your errands.  You'll get it out of the way and curb your appetite in the process
  • Hydrate: Remember to drink 20 oz of water every day and for every caffeinated drink you need to add another 8 oz of water.
  • Get outside!  For those of you who have your kids on break, bring them with you to the track or try a beach workout with sand runs.

Circuit Training this week

Hello!

Hope you all are well and enjoyed the Thanksgiving week.

I wanted to let you know that I'm offering a new circuit training format that I think you'll enjoy.  It combines some of the work we've been doing in our core sessions with other exercises using jump ropes, medicine balls and athletic drills.   I'm having a lot of fun training folks in this format and would love for you to try it out too!  Check out the schedule for Group Circuit Training below and let me know if you'd like to join.  As always, the schedule is below for our regular Core Sessions, if you haven't been to one in a while, maybe now is the time to get in a few sessions before the Holidays.

Note:  I am out of town next week (week of December 4th), so I will not have any midweek sessions.  I will be available on the weekend, so please email me if you would like to schedule a session then.

Last Chance Workout

Ok, so I'm definitely watching too many episodes of The Biggest Loser.  ;-)  However I did want to make sure that you knew that you still have time to get a bunch of good workouts this week before Thanksgiving week food, travel and getting out of your normal workout routine.  So, take advantage of the sun and get out there!

I've also added an easy healthy pancake recipe that I use with the kids often.  It's packed with protein and quick to make.

Hope to see you this week for a workout!

A quick and easy "Good for you" Meal

I had a craving for fried rice last week, but didn't want to eat such a greasy meal.  So, I improvised with brown rice from Trader Joe's and whipped up a healthy fried rice alternative that tastes good and is also pretty quick to make.   Try it out, ingredients are below.  Hope you like it.

Have a great week.  Hope to see you soon.

Barb

Healthy Fried Rice:
What you need:
-Trader Joe's Frozen Brown Rice
-3 Egg Whites
-1/4 cup Lean Cooked Ham (preferably diced )
-1/4 cup chopped avocado
-Handful of spinach
-Salt & Pepper to taste (careful on the salt though)
-Optional - 1/4 cup black beans and/or corn

Mixing it up:
-Microwave the TJ's brown rice per directions on the box.   Then, mix the cooked rice with the egg whites in a frying pan on medium heat that has been lightly greased with Olive Oil or Canola Oil and mix until the eggs are cooked in (roughly 2-3 mins).   Mix in the ham and stir fry for another 2-3 minutes.  Finally, mix in the spinach and the avocado and lightly season with salt and pepper until all the ingredients are heated up together.  Makes about 2-3 servings.

It's Complex...

...carbohydrates...that is, that you need for your body.    It's important to eat more Complex carbohydrates as it has a significant (and positive) impact on your energy levels.

In general, your body needs carbohydrates in high doses daily to function properly.   When you eat Complex carbohydrates they are either used immediately for energy or are stored for energy at a later time, providing a steady dose of blood sugar and providing you with sustained energy throughout the day.  While Simple carbohydrates will also give you energy,  it doesn't last very long and causes a spike in blood sugar.

Although it's going to be hard to completely eliminate all the Simple carbs that you eat, you can at least start the process of incorporating more Complex carbs into your diet to start changing the way you fuel your body.   Below is a quick list of Complex carbohydrates taken from an article on Livestrong.com to get you started.

Have a great week and hope to see you soon.

Why do the Intensive?

I'm looking for folks who would like to join me for a 3 Week Mini-Intensive.  Why the intensive you ask? Because it's a great way to commit to working out your core muscles 2 times a week for 3 straight weeks.   You will also be with other friends who will be working out right alongside you for the entire 3 weeks.
You will feel stronger after the session, and who knows maybe you will stick with it and continue with working out your core after the intensive.  PS, if we can get a group starting next week, we can squeeze in 3 weeks of workouts prior to Thanksgiving week when workouts get pushed to the side to make room for turkey and pumpkin pie!  ;-)    Hope to see you soon!

Getting your head out of the clouds to workout

On cloudy days, it's challenging to get motivated about working out.  When I lived in San Francisco, it was almost a daily challenge.   Nevertheless, I would put on workout clothes to make sure that at some point,  I got my workout in.  Oftentimes, I would run through a cloudy, cold and misty Golden Gate Park.    Magically, after about 10 minutes I was warmed up, enjoying the view and motivated to finish the rest of a good run workout.    So, get your head out of the clouds, avoid the urge to skip your workouts and get out there.  And maybe, if the budget allows, you can treat yourself to a new Fall/Winter workout outfit for that extra bit of motivation to get your workout in when the weather is bad.    Have a great week.  Hope to see you soon.

5 Truths About Sugar: (abbreviated from the Men's Health Nutrition Guide)

Truth #1: Sugar doesn't cause diabetes - Too much sugar does.  An un-precendented rise in sugar & starch consumption in the past 100 yrs may be related.  Your job to avoid an adult onset is to drop your weight and watch your sugar intake.

Truth #2: Avoiding high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) won't save you from obesity - Despite the correlation of an increase of the avg American body weight and the use of HFCS in the 70's & 80's it's not a smoking gun.  Obesity is still related to consuming too many calories.  Bottom line if your weight is under control then your calorie intake is reasonable.

Truth #3: Too much sugar fills your blood with fat - Your body can't metabolize a sweet snack as fast as you can eat it, so your body ultimately stores the excess as fat.

Truth #4: Too much sugar stresses your system - The oral glucose tolerance test used to diagnose diabetes has you consume 75 grams of glucose essentially creating a stress test on how your body tolerates that much sugar.  Yet a 24 oz soda often contains more than 75grams of sugar.

Truth #5: Fewer blood sugar spikes help you live longer - If you live large - big meals, lots of beer - you may be shortening your life even if your weight is okay.  Repeated blood-sugar spikes stress the organs that support your metabolism.

Importance of eating breakfast

I am a HUGE breakfast fan.  I can eat breakfast food all day.  Thankfully, I'm not eating pancakes, waffles and greasy sausage every morning.  But, I definitely make a point to eat breakfast every morning. Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day.  It gives you energy to start the day and moreover it is linked to many health benefits including weight control and improved performance.

Most mornings, I whip up an egg white omlette with spinach, mushroom and some low fat cheese.  It carries me through most of the day and it doesn't weight me down for workouts.  If you don't have much time, try a protein smoothie.  Here's one I grabbed from the cookbook: "Healthy foods for kids":

"Sesame Street" Smoothie (serves 2)
2 melon wedges: seeded, skinless and chopped
3/4 cup fresh or frozen raspberries
2 medium bananas
1 tbl Sesame Seeds
1 tbl Tahini (ground sesame paste)
11/4 cups lowfat milk, (chilled)
1-2 Tsp Honey

Blend all fruit to a puree, then add Sesame seeds and tahini & blend for another minute.  Gradually pour in the milk & honey until all blended.

Have a great week!  Hope to see you soon.

You know you want them....

...flat abs, toned arms and strong legs.

So what are you doing about it? Do you feel like you are there already?

Total body conditioning combined with 2-4 days a week of a cardiovascular activity (running, cycling, swimming) will get you there.   I know, I know, it's hard to do all of that and still work, manage family, sleep, eat, live etc...   However, it is doable and once you get started and stay with it, you will see those results.

Try putting yourself on a schedule THIS WEEK for 2 days of muscle conditioning and 2 days of some kind of cardio and see how it feels, then stick with it for a month. If you don't have a lot of time, start with 20 minute workouts of the above over 4 days. And if all else fails and there is no time at all, do push ups. It's the best total body exercise that not only strengthens your core, but, when done correctly, can also provide a brief cardio workout when done at faster speeds.

And, if you need guidance, I'm here to help, email me, come to a session or flag me down when you see me and I can get you going towards what you want. Have a great week. Hope to see you soon.

Challenge yourself this week.

Last week, I worked out using a TRX suspension system and it was a heck of a workout! I did 1 legged suspended planks, bicep curls at an angle, side lying suspended oblique work and a whole lot of other suspended moves. In addition to all of these circus tricks, I did a lot of burpees, which I don't think I've done since the Physical Fitness Test in High School. In all, it was a great workout that reminded me that mixing up the exercise routine a bit by trying something new is not only challenging, but can also take you to new levels of strength and fitness. So challenge yourself to something new this week. Break out that old jump rope, try out some burpees or take a class you've never taken before or haven't been to in a long time.

Enjoy your week and hope to see you in a session.

Write down what you eat everyday for one week...

...it's such a simple task, but it's a pretty telling tale of what kinds of foods you eat on a regular basis. If you are not following any specific diet this is a great "experiment" for yourself to see what kinds of foods you naturally gravitate to.

If you already watch what you eat, this could reveal that you may need some variety in your diet. Oftentimes I find 1 amazing healthy recipe and then make it every week for a few months to the point of burn out. If you don't watch what you eat, you will see how often you eat unhealthy foods. Snacks are usually a big culprit, a lot of energy bars (cliff bars, luna, etc) pack a LOT of sugar and many alternative chips (veggie chips, etc) have a LOT of sodium. Try it out, see what you find out at the end of the week and let me know how it goes.

Have a great week and hope to see you at a Session soon.

Keeping up with Workouts and Healthy Eating During Travel

Whether you are traveling for work or for fun, it's always a challenge to keep up with your regular workouts and with healthy eating during travel. So here are a few tips on how to fit it all in.

When packing, make sure to pack at least 1 set of workout clothes and your running/athletic shoes. In addition, pack healthy snacks such as raisins and almonds, a low sugar energy bar and fresh fruit. Also, don't forget to pack your re-usuable water bottle to help you remember to drink water every day.

For workouts, use the hotel gym or research online ahead of time to see if there are any cool classes you can take in that town. Even just one 20 minute jog/brisk walk will help you meet your workout quota . If there are no good options, 15-20 mins of gentle stretching exercises every day you are away can also help. For snacks, try to stick with healthy snacks that you packed. For meals, be conscious of your food choices and pick restaurants that offer healthy choices or alternatives. And, if you have to choose fast food, more fast food restaurants are offering better and healthier choices. I usually look for a Starbucks so that I can get their snack packs or pre-made sandwiches. I also found a great article (link below) in More Magazine that highlights other good fast food choices.

Enjoy your next trip, I hope these tips will help you get that workout in.

Hope to see you for a session this week.

Starting and Staying with a Good Training Plan

One of the toughest things about working out is sticking with your training plan or exercise regimen. One great way to stay on track is to establish a goal.

First, establish your goal. For example, "I'm going to get in shape by July 4th" or "I'm going to dedicate the next 12 weeks to get in shape." Then, pick your favorite activities: running, cycling, hiking, yoga, boot camp, etc... If you are starting from scratch, start off slow, if you are already working out and reaching your plateau, try something very different from what you've been doing (aerial arts, boxing, plyometrics). Finally, develop a plan either on your own or with a coach or trainer and start working out.

Once you've established a goal and created your plan, your workouts will become more a part of your life and less of a hassle. Your increased and regular physical activity will not only curb your appetite but will also affect your food choices. Moreover, if you know you have a hard workout scheduled in the morning, you will most likely not load up on junk food the night before. These benefits and more can be achieved through a dedicated training plan.

We spend so much time planning and setting goals for so many aspects of our lives, but don't necessarily dedicate as much time to our own physical health and well-being. So, what have you got to lose? Get started and set your fitness goal now.

Have great week. Schedule and announcements below. Hope to see you soon.

Did you get all of your workouts in last week?

It's Sunday. Take a quick look back at the past week. Did you get all your workouts in? If you didn't, why not? What got in the way of that run you wanted to do or that class you wanted to take?

Make a promise to yourself that this week, you are going to try your best to not miss them this time. The more you establish a weekly workout routine, whatever it is, the harder it is to break it. You will find ways to work around those obstacles and get those workouts in. So, make a plan for this week to schedule in those workouts.

Have a great week and hope to see you at a session,

Long Term Weight Loss Tips from Shape Mag

What a beautiful weekend! Hope you all took advantage of this great weather.

I've been asked about diet a few times and wanted to share with you an article from Shape magazine that I liked. In it, they provide weight loss tips that resonated with me.

Personally, I've found that whenever I'm specifically training for a race (marathon, half-marathon, etc.), I tend to choose healthier foods that work well for my weekly workouts. The more training I do, the better I eat and it generally helps make me feel better in my workouts.

Hope you can join me for a session this week. Take a look at the schedule below. Also, we are looking for 2-3 more people for a 3 or 6 week Intensive. Details below. Let me know if you are interested.

Schedule this week:
Email me to save your spot. 2 person min to run each session. We will meet at South Park in Hermosa Beach

Tuesday, 9:30a All Levels
Wednesday, 9:00a All Levels
Thursday, 9:30a All Levels
Friday, 9:00a All Levels
Saturday, 8:00a All Levels

3 or 6 Week Intensive:
We need 2-3 more people to run the Intensive. The Intensive will run on Tuesday & Thursday at 9:30a. Each session will get progressively more difficult and you will workout with the same group each session. You will also have the option at the end of the 3 weeks, to continue for another 3 weeks making it a 6 week Intensive. Email me ASAP if you would like to participate.

Warm Weather Tips & Modified Schedule

I'm not sure the weather from week to week can get any more extreme, but here we are with the forecast showing 70's for most of the week. On that note, make sure to hydrate, especially if you are running outdoors. You should have about 3 quarts of water/day; and for every caffeinated drink, you will need to drink another 8 oz to make up for the dehydration that those drinks cause. If you are bad about drinking water, treat yourself to a fancy new water bottle and take it with you wherever you go.

Now go out, enjoy this beautiful weather and hope to see you in a session this week.

Thankful for the sun today.

After running a marathon in a 55 degree rainy thunderstorm, today's sun was such a relief and a wonderful environment for my day of rest. Part of my relaxing came in the form of a Yoga class at my local gym. It was just what I needed to stretch out my achey body after so much running.

At the end of the class, my instructor reminded us to be thankful for all the "little blessings" in our lives: fresh water in our taps, a roof over our heads to shield us from all this rain... It was a wonderful reminder of the good lives that we live. So, when you can, take a moment to be thankful for your own "little blessings". Have a great week.

Running on the mind...

Hello,

6 days until I run the LA Marathon and it's been quite a training experience. I've done long runs, short runs, fast runs, sprints, hills and I have to say I have totally met my running quote in the past 12 weeks. Hope it doesn't rain on Sunday. Yipe!

On the note of running, a few of you have asked about help for your own running goals. If you are interested in getting a group together to work on improving your running, let me know and I can try to get a group together that can meet at convenient times.

Hope you can make it to a session this week. Schedule is below. See you soon!

Workouts this week & 5 Nutrients that You're Not Getting (from More Magazine)

This week, I am my own test case for the benefits of a weekly routine of Core workouts. I just completed a long run and compared to last week's long run, I feel great! Last week after a reduced workout routine, I suffered on my long run; this week after getting back into the groove of working out my core, I felt strong. So make a routine of working out your core at least twice a week as it makes such a difference in all of your other workouts (especially Cardio).

I also grabbed a good article from More that is a quick reminder of all the nutrients that we should be taking in. I know I forget so this little reminder helps me for my grocery shopping this week. Hope it's helpful to you too.

This week's schedule is below. Hope to see you soon.

When was the last time you did a push up?

OK...if I am going to ask you this question, I of course have to answer it as well. It's been over a week since I did a push up. Thankfully, I got 2 runs in and a little bit of skiing. So, the week wasn't a total loss for exercise. The reason I ask this question, is because a push up, as simple as it is, is such a great quick and simple exercise that you can do just about anywhere. Also, with proper form, the push up does an amazing job of strengthening the Core Muscle Group. So, try a few push ups this week. You can do them with me at a Session or just squeeze a few in on your own. If you stick with it, and incorporate it into your routine, you will get stronger.

Hope you all had a great week and I hope to see you at a Session this week. Check out the schedule below. Email to save your spot.

Core Group Sessions: Reservations are required, please email me. All Sessions will be held at South Park this week. Note that in the case of rain, sessions will be moved indoors. Location TBD and I will email all confirmed attendees by 8am the morning of the session.

Tuesday: 9:30a All Levels
Wednesday: 9:00a All Levels
Thursday: 9:30a All Levels
Friday: 9:00a Int/Adv
Saturday: 8:00a All Levels

If there are other times that you would like or if you would like to start your own group, feel free to email me. As usual, tell a friend and bring them with you to a session for free.

Have a fantastic week!

Back at SouthPark This Week + Best Foods for Active Women from More Magazine

Hello!

Just a quick note to share this week's schedule and to let you know that we are back at South Park in Hermosa Beach for this week. I'm looking into getting a permit to use Aviation Park in Redondo, but haven't finalized plans yet. So until then, we will be back at South Park (5th Street and Valley). Also, a few of you have asked about tips for healthy eating so I grabbed a quick article from More Magazine below. See below for more details.

Core Group Session Schedule this Week:
All Sessions at South Park in Hermosa Beach. Email me to save your spot.

Tuesday: 9:30a Mini Intensive (closed)
Wednesday: 9:00a Core Group Session (All Levels Welcome)
Thursday: 9:00a Mini Intensive (closed)
Thursday: 10:00a Core Group Session (All Levels Welcome)
Friday: 9:00a Int/Adv Session
Friday: 10:00a Core Group Session (All Levels Welcome)
Saturday: 8:00a Core Group Session (All Levels Welcome - 2 Person Min to run)

Note: That I will only be conducting Saturday Sessions the week of February 21st (aka Ski Week for many of you).

Best Foods for Active Women
A few of you have asked about Tips for Healthy Eating, so below is an article from MORE Magazine that provides a few good tips. I've noticed that when I exercise more, that my cravings for junk foods diminish as my body craves better foods to use as "fuel" for a given workout. For example, if I know I am going for a long run on Sunday, I'll go out of my way to whip up a pasta dinner (lean chicken, spinach in a red sauce over spaghetti), because I want to have a good workout. As a see more article for food and meal plan, I will continue to share them with you all.
